Volunteer training

As a potential volunteer, you will receive an orientation package to introduce you to Cancer Hope Network. Next, you will participate in a training session that covers our policies and procedures as well as communication tips and role playing that explores different scenarios you may face. Our training outlines your role, responsibilities and teaches techniques for working with patients in the most helpful ways.

Cancer Hope Network support volunteer training sessions are regularly held throughout the New York tri-state (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut) and Philadelphia areas. If you live outside of these areas, please complete a volunteer request form and we will contact you about online training opportunities.

Support Volunteer training will provide skills that enable you to:

• Prepare for and conduct a support match
• Encourage people to talk about their experiences surrounding cancer
• Create an atmosphere of safety and total acceptance
• Listen actively and empathetically
• Help the patient look beyond the diagnosis and treatment
• Document and keep a log of patient matches
